Hi guys , I come back to the table manner topic . Last week I discussed table manners in Europe and Asia, this week I will discuss about table manner in India. India is dominated of Islam and Hinduism. Muslims don’t consume pork and Hindu don’t eat beef . India’s country is femous for its films. In Indonesia we can see Indian film from morning till night.
By looking Indian films, we know various foods in india It makes me want to go to that country and taste it right away, but in India it has a unique way of eating that we need to know first.
When dining with Hindus, don’t touch directly any food that is being served to others, and this is especially the case between men and women : this makes it impure. When dining with devout Muslims, it is especially important for women not to touch directly any food that is being served to men : this also makes it impure.
Traditionally ,eating in India using hands. put your right hand when we eat and receive an additional food offer. wash your hands before we occupy positions on the dining table.
For start and after meals will be less polite if cleaned with tissue or cloth.
Indian tradition doesn’t not emphasize on the use of cutlery, which is considered to be a part of western culture, such as fork and knif. Indian food such as curries and gravies are enjoyed best when eaten with hands. It is an innate part of the culture to eat with hands.
You’re not expected to use your left hand while eating. Even breads and rotis are broken into pieces using the right hand alone. But you’re supossed to transfer food from the common plate using your clean left hand.
playing with food or in any ways distorting the food is unacceptable.
If meal is served over banana leaves (in south India) then it is customar to fold the leaves over from the top (and not the bottom as this might be considered disrespectful in some parts of India) at the and of the meals. This is to note the host that you have finished eating.
when bribing food, make sure to bribe does not contaminate the palm of the hand. Use your fingers only to eat.
When eating, use medium speed. don’t be too rushed or to slow. Eating slowly will be considered as an insult, you are judged to be dislike of a banquet. It is also forbidden to look at the dinner plate and other guests’ dishes for too long.
Overall, it is hard to list a couple of points to define table manners in Indian culture.
